Big Tom Gap Trail

This trail can be used for a loop with the Buncombe Horse Trail, Mt. Mitchell Trail, and Black Mountain Crest Trail and also provides great views
This narrow trail is extremely steep and follows unsteady rock debris up the path. It is well blazed in blue. It provides great views, including Maple Camp Bald to the northeast. No water exists on this trail. The trail can be used for a loop with the Buncombe Horse Trail, Mt. Mitchell Trail, and Black Mountain Crest Trail.
Directions: This trail begins on the Buncombe Horse Range Trail on its western side. It is marked with a wooden sign an is blazed in blue. It reaches the Black Mountain Crest Trail near Big Tom Peak.

Briar Bottom Bicycle Trail

The trail runs up through a virgin hemlock stand following the South Toe River upstream.
The trail runs up through a virgin hemlock stand following the South Toe River upstream. Two stream crossings are over rustic bridges built of natural locust timbers designed to resemble old railroad trestles complemented with handrails. The trail joins a loop road which goes around Briar Bottom Group Campground. Follow this road right back to the point from which you began.
Directions: From Burnsville go east on US19E for about 4.3 miles to an access road to NC 80. Turn right (south) go for .6 miles and turn right again on NC 80 (south). Follow this road for 11.6 miles to the Mt. Mitchell Golf Course and turn right on FR 472.(A sign is at this turn for Black Mtn. campground). This road changes to gravel. After it changes to gravel, arrive at an intersection where you can go straight or take a right. Take a right on this road. Go to a parking lot on the left with a bulletin board with trail maps and information. You can park here and walk to the trailhead.

Shinbone Trail
Length: 8.5 miles Rating: Moderate
The trail flanks Shinbone Creek and provides views of the Unaka Mountains and the magnificent Nolichucky Gorge.
The trail follows an old logging road through woods full of poplar, oak, and maple trees. The trail is quite rocky and not currently blazed.
Directions: From Burnsville go east 1.1 miles on US 19E and take a left (north) on NC 197. Stay on this road for 6.6 miles and look for a sign pointing to the left that says "Green Mountain". Turn left here and go 1.5 miles. Cross a narrow bridge and take a right on Jacks Creek Road. (you will still be on NC 197). Follow this road for 3.4 miles and take a right on NC 197. At 1.4 miles, you will take a right to stay on this road. Keep going for 7.9 miles, and you will see a pull off to your right (near NC/TN State line). You can park here and begin hiking on Forest Service Road 5583 to the left, or drive up FR 5583 to the locked gate on the left and start there.
